Surviving Unicorn is hosted by Eisha Love and CeCe McDonald, two advocates and storytellers whose lives and public work bring hard-earned perspective to conversations about survival, identity, justice, healing, and transformation.

Eisha Love is a Chicago-based activist, storyteller, and media personality from the Austin neighborhood on the city’s West Side. Her advocacy grew out of lived experience and became a public mission after surviving incarceration following a transphobic assault. Since then, she has used her story to advocate for transgender rights, criminal justice reform, visibility, and the right to self-definition.

Eisha gained wider recognition through ACLU Illinois’ Trans in America documentary series in 2018. Her work has continued across public advocacy and media, including testimony in support of Illinois name-change reform legislation HB2542, The Deadliest Year, work connected to The Chi, and the documentary project What’s in a Name. She has also worked alongside organizations including ACLU Illinois, the Transformative Justice Law Project, Equality Illinois, GLAAD, Brave Space Alliance, Chicago Therapy Collective, Howard Brown Health, and Injustice Watch.

Through Surviving Unicorn, Eisha is creating a space where truth, humor, healing, visibility, and transformation can exist in the same conversation.

CeCe McDonald

Activist • Speaker • Advocate • Cultural Voice

CeCe McDonald is a nationally recognized transgender activist, speaker, and advocate whose story became a major point of conversation around race, gender identity, self-defense, and the criminal legal system. After surviving a racist and transphobic attack, her case drew national and international attention and helped galvanize support for transgender women of color facing violence and criminalization.

Following her release from incarceration in 2014, CeCe turned that public attention into advocacy for transgender rights, racial justice, prison reform, and the right of marginalized people to live safely and define themselves on their own terms. Her story was chronicled in the documentary FREE CeCe, and her work has been recognized through national media, public speaking, The Advocate’s 40 Under 40, and the Bayard Rustin Civil Rights Award.

As co-host of Surviving Unicorn, CeCe brings candor, resilience, lived experience, and a fearless commitment to conversations about survival, healing, justice, and community.

Trans stories are too often silenced, especially in the times we are living in. Surviving Unicorn exists to uplift trans women who have faced difficult challenges, continued moving forward, and discovered their own strength, identity, and resilience along the way.
